Good Morning Everyone!
We have gotten off to a booming start this month! Check out our hashtag: #mtrcSOTW to see other people’s covers of the Song of the Week. And if you haven’t already seen the covers that Catherine and I posted last week, you can check out our Facebook page!
This week’s Song of the Week is Wiz Khalifa (ft. Charlie Puth)’s See You Again from Furious 7.
As Catherine eased us in last week with Twenty One Pilots’s, “Stressed Out,” we’re going deeper today. This song has a strong driving beat and real spoken rap–no “recitative” style rapping.
Wiz Khalifa’s style of rapping is grounding, and engaging. His words,
“How could we not talk about family when family’s all that we got?
Everything I went through you were standing there by my side
And now you gonna be with me for the last ride”
describe a theme that is universal. Even if the family is not related by blood, the support system that structures our lives is deeply important to our well-being. Khalifa’s lines provide depth and clarity to the song, defining brotherhood and the deep connection that we have with others in our lives.
This song is focused around themes relating to family, and friends. Strong relationships. I can see an easy way to get this song into your session through using it as a basic structure for some lyric writing. Have your clients write lines of verse, and then insert the Khalifa’s hook and Charlie’s chorus.
I encourage you to take some time this week to try and rap a few of the lines from this song! Perhaps even make a cover! 🙂
